An “Angel smile” is when a baby smiles at the very time that he or she is born. It is a sign of communication that the baby is there and also it shows human beings belong to a society since they are born. As we grew up, we learn a language to express our feelings, tell our thoughts, and to request or complaint about something. For language learners in Japan, movies are a good way to look at conversation.
I have picked up two movies, “I am Sam” and “Kramer vs. Kramer”, which are about the relationship between families. Both of the families firmly trust each other, so when they quarrel over something, they usually talk directly when requesting or complaining.
“I am Sam” is a movie about Sam. He is below average in intelligence, seven years-old in intelligence, and Lucy, his daughter, who is really smart. Because of his intelligence, he is worried whether he could raise Lucy when she becomes seven year-old. Although she is six years-old, she is capable of displacing true empathy for all kinds of people. They have lived together since she was born, but one day he was arrested for solicitation, and a woman from the department of child and family services accidentally questions his ability as a father. He is brought to trial and he loses custody of Lucy. To get her back, he decided to hire an attorney, Lita.
“Kramer vs. Kramer” is also a movie about a family, whose members include Ted, Joanna, and their son, Billy. One day, Joanna decides to leave them because she wants to discover her potential as an individual or a woman, not Ted’s wife or Billy’s mother.
