In the First World War, there were many fronts. However, we can say that the Western Front and the Eastern front were 2 of the main fronts in this war.
First, the Western front was a battle zone between Germany and its enemies, France and Britain. In this front, because of the trench warfare, the stalemate situation was developed. A stalemate is when two forces meet and neither side can’t take a move any further, all they can do is stay inside the trenches. But, both sides advanced from their defensive positions after several years, during this period of trench warfare, there were many significant changes.
New technology included tanks, poison gas, submarines, aircraft and machine guns were developed in this war, but they were actually responsible for making trenches in defense, therefore actually it contributed to the stalemate. Tanks and poison gas attacks assisted infantry charges to allow soldiers to invade enemy trenches. Poison gas was used by Germany at Ypres and the first tanks were used by Britain on the River Somme in 1916. However, scientists developed gas masks so gas attacks became ineffective very quickly.
The Eastern Front is where the place, which took place between Russia, Austria-Hungary and Germany. There were some trenches but in this front, trenches didn’t make war stuck like it happened on the Western Front. Main difference between this front and the Western Front was Russia’s effort.
